There’s no doubt that a beautiful manicure can’t be missed if we want to look good. Everyone desires to feel elegant. Even though that’s the case, it might not be possible for all of us due to various reasons. But, dear manicure fans, relax because there’s always an alternative to everything! In this case, a perfect manicure at home. Also, those home manicure essentials that you need.

Nails with red nail polish

You may think I am talking about home manicures because of the quarantine lifestyle we are all trying to adapt to, but I’ve done this before. The reason is that it saves time and money to go to a salon.

So, let’s get down to it!

At-home manicure essentials

So, to practice a nice manicure at home, it would be good to have the following tools.

  • Nail-polish remover
  • Nail clippers
  • Nail file
  • A cuticle nipper
  • Moisturizer
  • Basecoat
  • Nail polish
  • Topcoat
  • Nail dryer (if you are using gel polish)

I suppose it’s possible to do a manicure without all these tools, but on the other hand, to have a neat and clean result, it’s worth using them.

Now that we all know what you need, we can give ourselves a ‘perfect’ manicure at home. Below are step-by-step instructions on how I do it.

1. Remove old polish

To get a clean and even manicure, you must first remove the old polish from your nails.

All you need is a remover and a piece of cotton or cloth. Some people put some polish remover in the cap and dip a strip in it, but I rarely use that. I drizzle some on my nail and immediately wipe it off with a piece of cotton. When I am done, I relax for about 2-3 minutes and give my nails time to dry completely from the remover.

2. File

Trim your nails before you use a nail file on them. That is, if necessary.

After that comes the fun part, filing your nails. This part is fun for me because you get to see how creative you can be. Innovative in terms of choosing the shape you love. I have always opted for an oval or square nail shape, but that does not mean you can not choose a unique shape. Just decide on the shape you want.

3. Soak your nails

Put your hands in a bowl of warm water and add some soap. I usually use my regular hand soap, but you can also use shampoo or any other type of cleaning soap you may have. Just make sure you do not overdo it because it can weaken your nails.

4. Remove the thickened skin around the nails

After dipping your hands in warm water, the skin around the nail will soften and be easily and painlessly cared for. This is the right time to use a cuticle remover.

It will remove the dead tissue around your nail and make it soft and comfortable to work on. This is one measure that you should definitely do to get a perfect manicure at home.

5. Apply moisturizer

Why moisten it? It’s just a trick to prevent the almost dry nail polish from smearing later.

Also, you can give yourself a simple hand massage at this stage. I ‘stole’ this trick from the salon I used to go to. I have found that it is not only part of nail care but also makes you feel good.

Pretend you are at a spa and give yourself a little treat. Then before you move on to the next step, make sure there’s no glitter on your nails. If there is, use some nail polish remover to make sure everything is in order.

6. Polish

Applying nail polish is pretty simple. Just follow these 3 necessary steps.

  • Apply a base coat
  • Use your color polish
  • Finish with a topcoat

Tip: When applying the base coat, use only a thin layer. Fill the brush with enough nail polish to cover the nail in one coat and keep your hand steady while applying polish.

And that’s it! 6 steps and you have just treated yourself to a beautiful manicure at home.
